Maui Activities

Maui is an island in Hawaii that’s becoming more and more popular each year. No wonder, it has a lot of activities and fun to offer and still the natural calm beauty is present everywhere you go. You might find that there are so many things to do that it’s almost hard to choose. I will here list some of the top activities for this island.

Maui offers many opportunities to go on cruises around the island. There are cruises that take you from the shore to different spots outside the island, with opportunities to do some snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing. It’s a great way to spend the day in a relaxed way and to enjoy the sunshine and some nice dining along the way. There are also shorter dining and cocktail cruises which gives you a great way to introduce the evening.

Other boat tours can offer whale watching, one of the most popular and amazing things you can do while at Maui. These rides start in the early morning or at sunset and take you to some spots where whales normally can be viewed.  It’s quite a feeling when you’re getting close to such a magnificent animal as the whale. This two hour tour is a great way to start off your day or evening. You can also do some amazing snorkeling!

Maui Activities

While at Maui you probably want to visit the Haleakala Crater which is an extinct volcano and that can be explored in many different ways. Why not get to know this beautiful area from the horse-back, and ride through the landscape in a serene, relaxed way? If you are on the more adventurous side, you might prefer to go on a mountain bike ride downhill the volcano; most surely an exciting experience.

Haleakala can also be explored by foot; there are guided tours and you’ll get to walk through underground passages with stalactites and other beautiful formations from the volcanic activity as well as exploring the outside scenery.

To get an eagle eye perspective on Haleakala and its surrounding area you might want to go hang-gliding above it. It’s available both for beginners and the more experienced hang-glider and an experience you most certainly won’t forget. For those less adventurous there are helicopter tours offered that takes you around the island, and gives you a great panoramic view of it.

Surfing is great at Maui, and you find beaches suitable for both the beginner and the advanced surfer. Honolua Bay is your best pick during winter months and Lahaina Harbor is great in the summer. In the hotels you can often find surfboards to rent and in the area around the beaches you can find beginners surf-courses.

These are some of the unlimited possibilities there are for activation during your stay at this beautiful island.

Maui Travel - Airports - Buses

June 9, 2008

If Maui is the island of your choice you have a few options on how to get there. This island has three different airports: Kahalui Airport, which is the main one; Kapalua, or West Maui Airport and Hana Airport.

Kahalui Airport has a few flights departing from the west coast of the mainland of the United States. There are also a lot of flights between the other islands of Hawaii arriving at Kahalui, and for most destinations this is probably the airport you want to arrive at. To go to Kihei or Wailea is only a half an hour drive, and to Lahaina or Kaanapali it takes more or less an hour.

If you’re going to Lahaina you might consider taking a flight to Kapalua Airport from Honolulu, Oahu. Most flights in general from the mainland to Hawaii go to Honolulu and sometimes you can find an even better deal by changing your flight there. To Kapalua it’s only a 15 minutes drive to Lahaina.

Hana airport is a small airport, located on the east coast of Maui and the service flying there is air taxis, with rather small planes from the other airports at the island and some interflights from the other islands. If you’re staying at Hana this might be a convenient way to get there.

Maui Airports

Most visitors that’s arriving to Maui choose to rent a car at the airport. There are a lot of different car rentals situated at Kahalui Airport. These are Advantage, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thifty. Often it’s a good idea to book in advance to ensure you have a car waiting for you.

There’s also a public transit service; Maui Bus, that takes you from the airport to a lot of the more popular sites at the island. This is great for those on a budget, with only 1 dollar per ride. Since it’s a public bus this might have the downside that you probably will have to change buses or take a taxi while getting close to you destination.

There are also a few tour companies that offer shuttle services with bus and minibus from the airports to you hotels, check on the internet beforehand and book in advance to get this service.
Outside the airport you also find a pretty good taxi cab service. This is an easy and comfortable way to get to you hotel, and you find taxis waiting for passengers 24 hours a day.

This is all information on how to get from the main airport Kahalui to your hotel. If you are travelling to one of the regional airports, there are car rentals, taxis and some bus-services provided, even though it’s less frequent. You will easily get to your destination.
